South Tyneside

Connect Roads South Tyneside was awarded the contract to design, finance, provide and maintain the street lighting and highway signs in South Tyneside for 25 years.

During the first five years of the project, 20,600 of the existing columns will be replaced together with 8,000 existing highways signs, bollards and subway lights. A further 1500 new columns will be installed in currently unlit passageways between rows of houses that are known locally as 'back lanes'.

Installation and maintenance has been subcontracted to the Balfour Beatty Group subsidiary Balfour Beatty WorkPlace.
