Outstanding partnership
South Tyneside Council has praised the outstanding partnership they have with Balfour Beatty under the 'Light it' scheme.
The partnership was formed two years ago to transform the borough's street lighting.
The £63m contract is to replace 80 per cent of the lighting units over a five-year period, and to maintain the street lighting and highway signs over the next 25 years.
The five-year replacement programme was split into 10 milestones. Now the fourth milestone – to replace almost 7,000 lamp- posts in South Tyneside, 30% of the total – has been reached a month ahead of schedule.
Council leader Coun Paul Waggott said: "This is a fantastic achievement, and is a testament to the outstanding partnership working between the council and Balfour Beatty.
"To achieve four milestones and remain one month ahead of target on a contract of this size is phenomenal."
