A30 / A35 East Road periodic maintenance

Where is East Road?

The East Road section of the A30 is near Bridport.

Background

The whole life plan identified a stretch of the network road of approximately 1.8 km in length as being in need of maintenance. The existing carriageway was showing signs of failure at deep level (200mm down) probably as a result of poor reinstatement of statutory undertakers trenches (gas board etc) in the past. Work consisted of digging out the existing road to a depth of 200 - 250mm, putting down two layers of bitumous base with a geogrid reinforcement between and a final surfacing layer of stone mastic asphalt on top, a surface which reduces tyre noise.
Problems to overcome:

  • Work could not be undertaken during the day because of traffic sensitivity
  • There are residential properties along the route who would be significantly affected by night working
  • The road had to be open each day following any night works

The solution

A decision was taken to stage the works over a 3 week period with works actually being completed in 2 weeks. To ensure that residents were kept fully informed of the process a letter drop was arranged. However, following the first night of works it was found that due to the location of a graveyard, the noise travelled to an adjacent housing estate. An immediate response to this was made whereby the whole housing estate was letter dropped, with a number of residents taken on an escorted trip to the works to explain what was happening.
