Connect Roads aspires to improve its overall environmental performance throughout the operation of its highways, incorporating the principles of sustainable development.
Through careful management, along with development of environmental action plans and the dedication and enthusiasm of staff, the maintenance team have been able to achieve many environmental success, including:
- Eradicating the use of weedkiller
- Development of thermal sensors along the route to accurately monitor road temperatures in order to safely reduce the quantity of salt applied to roads in winter
- Use of recycled aggregates and road materials in construction
- Landscape improvement to planted areas where vegetation growth was poor
- Development of a local biodiversity action plan to protect natural habitats
- A move to water-bourne paints for white-lining which is more efficient to apply while retaining the required reflectivity
- Introduction of photo electric cells which ensure lighting only illuminates when it is dark
- Increased litter patrols and collections to reduce the impact of motorist discarded litter on the surrounding countryside
- Scheduling of maintenance works based on traffic counts to ensure that congestion is minimal, thereby reducing fuel consumption and negative impacts on air quality
